art deco...midland hotel morecombe

a lovely curved hotel built in 1933 and designed by oliver hill...it had a short heyday of only 6 years as it was requisitioned to be a military hospital during the war...and was handed back in 1946...it had more success during the 50's and 60's but went into decline in the 70's due to the changing holiday patterns of going to the mediterranean instead of the english sea-side
eric gill was commissioned to design the 2 figures above the entrance and the painted ceiling at the top of the spiral staircase

after several owners it was bought by urban splash, renovated and re-opened in 2008
...it is well worth a visit to see the lovely simple curves of art deco..tea can be taken in the sea-facing lounge and restaurant too!!!

102 m high, built in 1968 and officially named st. john's beacon...originally housing a revolving restaurant...but closed in 1977 due to technical problems...now it is used by a local radio station...tours available and well worth it...a great view from up there!!!
(building in front is lewis's department store...another nice building)

view across the mersey from the pier head...you can see the mersey ferry

...the mersey ferry is mainly a tourist attraction now...it used to ferry workers across the river when shipbuilding was a big industry...when the ferry docks on the liverpool side of the river they play 'ferry cross the mersey' by gerry and the pacemakers!!!
